Ceiling vs Attic

In building science, ceilings—such as vaulted ceilings and other closed cavity roofs—are part of the conditioned space, with insulation placed directly within the sloped roof cavities. These designs lack an air gap or unconditioned space above, which can limit insulation thickness and make proper ventilation challenging. On the other hand, an attic is an unconditioned space located between the roof and the ceiling of the living area. Attics are typically ventilated and provide a space for laying insulation horizontally, allowing for greater insulation depth and better moisture and heat management. These differences in design and function affect energy efficiency, thermal comfort, and moisture control in a building.
